Iker Casillas Fernandez, popularly known the world over as Casillas is an international football player of the Spanish origin. He captains his national team (Spain) as well as the Spanish club Real Madrid. In his role as the captain of the Spanish national team, Casillas has been hugely successful. In 2008, Casillas led the team to their first ever European Championship after 44 years.

In the year 2010, Casillas led Spain to their first FIFA World Cup triumph. In the same tournament, he was also adjudged the best goalkeeper of the tournament and awarded the well-deserved Golden Glove award. So far, Casillas is only the third goalkeeper to have captained a FIFA World Cup Winning team. Iker Casillas is thus far the most capped player of the Spanish national team. Casillas is also Real Madrid’s most capped goalkeeper. He went past this distinction, earlier held by Paco Buyo, in February 2009. He is also the first and only goalkeeper to have been awarded the IFFHS Best Goalkeeper award four times.

Casillas has a road named after him in his birth town Móstoles, Madrid, Spain. On January 5,2012, Avenida de los Deportes [Sports Avenue] was renamed to Avenida Iker Casillas [Iker Casillas Avenue] to commemorate Casillas. He is fondly called “San Iker” meaning “Saint Iker.”
